Donkeys and mules in Santorini are part of the native charm of the island.
Riding a donkey can be really an amusing experience that you will never forget.
During the summer, the main business of the day is
carrying the tourists up and down the endless steep steps which connect Fira town down to the small port of Ormos, and Oia to Ammoudi harbour. Donkeys are extremely adept at negotiating the steps but do not get surprised if you notice that they ride very fast. Hold on tight and enjoy that wonderful experience.
Everyone on the island accepts the fact that a big part of the Caldera and its settlements wouldn’t exist without the support of donkeys because the main transportation task of construction materials was done by them.
You should also know that the donkeys will almost never kick or bite anyone.
They are renowned for having the patience of Job and therefore are ideally suited to being around children.
Believe it or not, the donkeys love children.
Needless to mention that you should treat the animals with care. Those adorable animals have heart & soul, so do not treat them badly.
Where can i pick up a donkey for my ride?
There are 3 way to get up and down from Fira to the old port – walk 588 steps, ride the cable car or ride a donkey.
You can thus pay for a lift on a mule to the old men waiting for tourists at the port.
Bear in mind that every donkey owner ownes a number of mules, and will not climb the path until all the mules have a passenger!
Alternatively, if you are in a hurry, an efficient cableway is available for the same purpose
If you decide to walk, keep in mind that you’ll be sharing the same path as the donkeys, so beware of the poop!
How much does it cost?
The price for renting a mule is 5 euros per person.
You can ride a donkey up (or down) the caldera from the main port.
How long does it take?
Each ride lasts about 25-35 minutes.
Please keep in mind that it is a long trip either way (about 483 steps). If you make up your mind to walk this path, then you can be sure that your legs will be shaking by the time you reached your destination.
The stepped way is littered with mule droppings, resulting a bad smells being noticeable during the entire way.
It is worth mentioning that donkeys are usually used in weddings, in order to carry the bride to the altar, or as a sightseeing “vehicle” on the island.
It’s also a picturesque and cute way to see some of the beaches around Fira and Oia or simply experience the old world charm.
PS. Nowadays there are numerous animal institutions and committees for the protection and preservation of mules.
There is a huge effort to preserve this species; authorities will provide proper documentation and health bills for the working donkeys and mules ensuring that they are healthy and sturdy enough to keep carrying people and luggage on their back, adding to the endless charm of Santorini.
