Many reviews and articles have been written about Santorini Island. Most of them cherish among others the beauty of Santorini sunsets, unique Cycladic architecture and great Greek hospitality. But, when you have to decide where to spend your precious vacations you might ask yourself… “Is Santorini really the best Greek Island?”
Well, if you ask us we will answer … “Yea, you should definitely come to Santorini at least once in your Life”. But don’t just take our word for it. Search for Santorini on internet and you will find out that it is regularly included in top lists of Europe’s and the world’s most desirable island destinations.
Santorini also have significant intrigue and mystery surrounding its history. Many believed, among them Plato, that Santorini was the site of ancient Atlantis the legendary lost civilization. Also Jules Verne made Santorini famous with its books “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea” and “The mysterious island” where captain Nemo and his crew watch the volcano eruption.
Once you decide to come to Santorini you can choose for your stay between two most popular villages which are the Fira (Thira) and Oia (Ia).
Fira is capital of Santorini and it is the biggest village on the island. After the earthquake of 1956 a part of the town was destroyed (only a small part of the 18th century buildings were saved). Fira is perched on the edge of an impressive cliff 260m high and offers a great panorama over the submerged volcano. On counterpart to the north of the island you will find Oia which is smaller village and less well-known.
Oia is much quieter, less touristy than Fira and provides more of a local flavor. Oia is also known for its spectacular sunsets, and several Cliffside cafes offer magnificent views. Attracted by the beauty, many artists have migrated to the village, and there are several art galleries here.
There are two attractions on Santorini that you shouldn’t miss the village of Oia and the archeological dig Akrotiri, once a prominent ancient town. Akrotiri, was a business center of Santorini in 2000 B.C. Akrotiri had many trade connections across the Aegean Sea, particularly with Crete. The architecture of the town was one of its kind. A lot of buildings were decorated with frescoes. There was also a drainage system, and the town may have been the birthplace of modern Western-style plumbing. But the the life of this thriving ancient civilization was brought to a sudden halt by a powerful volcanic blast around 1625 B.C.. This explosion was so powerful the entire island of Santorini was blown apart and left in a crescent moon shape.
